Back at Home:
While visiting the boat, I took specific pictures for review by my friend who knows the boat very well. He provided a list of items to consider that need repair, servicing or purchase. The boat wasn't completely ocean ready, but good enough to consider purchasing.
Challenges and Comfort:
The communication between the 2 parties needed to be absolutely clear. This is where a broker really earns their money. Since this was my very first private sale, my understanding of what the owner was asking for was not clear. I was able to meet the seller's requests, but the misunderstanding created quite a bit of stress in the purchase process.
This deal became available 10 months before we were actually ready to make our purchase. Based on the condition, and what was needed to make her ocean ready, we decided to move forward. This delay of us getting on board also allowed us to prepare our house for family to move in while we are away. So, we prepped and waited before we could move aboard. This was a very busy time for both of us, me with still working and Miriam packing away clothes and personal items, organizing and cleaning out odds and ends.
Documentation and Insurance:
I used a documentation agent Lisa Schwartz at www.allyachtregistries.com, who assisted me in obtaining the proper documentation for the boat. I highly recommend Lisa as she was very professional and guided me through the entire process. She was able to get all the documentation done in a short period of time. Lisa helped me through the difficult process of getting the documentation done correctly.
Our insurance agent Gary Golden from www.manifestmarine.com found us several policies to choose from. The policies were from reputable insurance companies, and he found a policy that met our needs and price.
Closing the deal:
When we closed the deal, this was a very exciting moment. Our new adventure and travel experience was starting to take off. We were both so very excited to get started and get on board.
With the purchase finally completed, we were still 10 months away for actually moving aboard the boat.
Because we purchased earlier than we planned, we needed a place to store the boat. Researching the internet, recommendations from other boat owners and others, we were able to find a reputable and secure location. With the boat secure in a safe location we started our process of getting ready to move aboard.
