Finally, we were able to leave Grenada and truly begin our adventures heading north! We sailed and motored and “motored/sailed” up to Carriacou, a small island which is part of Grenada. This is where Beryl hit, dead on, as a category 4 hurricane, the morning of June 30, 2024. It decimated the island and remained in very poor condition when we arrived in early November.
During our brief stay there, two men came by in a small, dilapidated wooden boat. They asked Tim if he'd like to buy some lobster. When Tim said, "maybe tomorrow", they pressed him to be specific. He told them that two 3-pound lobsters would work.
The next day they returned with 9 pounds of lobster. They asked Tim for a bucket, in which they placed 2 lobsters, gave them to Tim, and demanded $150. When we said that was too much, they got very angry, yelled at us and motored off, leaving the lobsters on our deck. We were in disbelief and did not know what to do. Thoughts of sailing off immediately came to mind, but we didn't want to steal the lobster. We called our friends for advice. They told us that they always err on the side of safety - pay for the lobsters and learn the island ways. When the men returned, as we knew they would, we gave them $100 USD. They took it, but I believe they were not exactly satisfied.
Later, when we went to immigration to check out, the older man was sitting at a table nearby, playing with some electronic gadgets. No words were spoken.
While we were waiting for the immigration officer to return, the man walked off and left his instruments there. Then, it began to rain. I thought about being nice and moving his things out of the rain. But I did not touch them. After checking out, as we left, the man was seeking shelter under a boat. Later, I thought that this may have been a plan. Once I touched his things, he may have had me arrested for stealing. Or try to bribe me to pay or he'd call the police. Who knows? What do you think?
Safety first,
Miriam
When I travel I try to remember this is their country and their customs. And, yes, always err on the side of safety. Consider the extra amount they charged tuition. Stay safe and have fun. You are looking healthy! -- d.
